Courses and training may be the product or service you are selling. They may be a sales tool in themselves. Or you may need to train clients to use your product or service.
Either way, it makes sense to deliver some of this training via your website using an e-learning platform and a learning management system (LMS).
Face-to-face training is the traditional delivery method, but it is costly in terms of time and effort for both you and your client. Experienced trainers know they can shorten face-to-face training sessions by delivering the basics ahead of time. That way, they can use the face-to-face time to help learners work through issues that relate directly to their day-to-day activities.
What are the benefits of e-learning?
Offering the basic steps in printed training materials is one way of doing it. But not all learners have the time or inclination to work through a textbook, so as a trainer you can turn up to run a live session and find that half your trainees have not done the preliminary work. If you offer the material via a learning management system, however, you and your client can check whether staff have done the required learning.
Once your learners have completed their training, you can assess them by administering a test or exam with automated marking, naturally.
The ability to assess and accredit staff learning is particularly important where you are delivering safety-critical training. It can also give you handy data about how long your learners spend studying and can give you information about areas that need extra reinforcement.
E-courses have other advantages over printed material.
The best systems will allow you to update course material quickly and easily – or even adapt it to meet the needs of different clients.
E-learning offers opportunities for using multimedia. So you can keep your learners engaged with animated diagrams, short videos and audio. You can use various methods to help them retain the information, too, such as short quizzes, role-plays or free-writing exercises.
E-courses may also be better than printed material for learners who need extra support, particularly if you build them with assistive technology in mind.
Learning done online is more portable than a stack of papers, too. Good quality e-courses work on different screen sizes, so learners can move between phone screen, desktop or tablet. This means they can do their learning wherever they are, whether it’s on the way to work, in the car between appointments, at their desk in protected learning time, or when working from home.
We’ve looked at how courses can help you gain and retain clients. But a robust e-learning offering can also help you to retain employees – our blogpost explains how.
